In a pivotal visit to the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, affirmed his commitment to transparency as the linchpin of his leadership in steering Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

Dr. Maida, who assumed office in October 2023, conveyed his vision and strategic priorities during the visit, emphasizing the critical role transparency plays in self-regulation and achieving operational excellence.

“Transparency is key. It is by transparency that we can self-regulate even as regulators. And by so doing, we would be putting ourselves on our toes, which in the long run will drive the Commission forward to achieve our goals of operational excellence,” remarked Dr. Maida.

Commending Minister Tijani for exemplifying transparency in leadership, Dr. Maida stressed the transformative potential of this attribute for both the people and industry players. He extended his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the responsibility of overseeing this vital sector of the economy.

During the meeting, Dr. Maida outlined his priorities, aligning them with the 5-Pillars of the Strategic Plan unveiled by the Minister. Quality of Experience (QoE) in the industry emerged as a non-negotiable focus, with the NCC CEO emphasizing the establishment of standards and serious compliance measures.

Broadband connectivity stood out as another priority, deemed by Dr. Maida as a pivotal enabler of the digital economy and financial inclusion. Acknowledging the importance of innovation, he highlighted the need to leverage technological evolutions like the 5G revolution for increased opportunities and enhanced connectivity.

A comprehensive review of internal processes at the Commission is underway, aimed at fostering efficiency and responsiveness through the digitization of operations. Dr. Maida emphasized that under his leadership, the Commission would prioritize regulatory activities to attract more investors, drive revenue generation, and boost employment in the telecommunications industry.

Reflecting on his visit to the Digital Bridge Institute in Lagos, Dr. Maida underscored plans to revamp and redirect the institute to align with the “Knowledge Pillar” of the Strategic Plan. This move aims to harness the institution’s vast potential to contribute to a knowledge-based economy.

Minister Tijani, extending a warm welcome to Dr. Maida, recognized the NCC’s pivotal role in achieving the nation’s digital aspirations. He pledged full collaboration to tap into the Commission’s quality for greater national value.

“The NCC is a stellar agency, and you have my respect for the work that you do. There is no future for the country without the NCC. Already, the quality you have is good; what we need to do now is to tap into this quality to bring about greater value for the country,” affirmed Minister Tijani.

“I want to assure you that you have the best partner in me. We will work together to achieve the goals and vision we have set,” he assured the NCC CEO.
